At Ross Elementary, I knew it was going to be a good day when I walked in and saw this.

Scoot don't Pollute

The 2nd graders did a great job practicing "Stop, Look & Listen" before crossing the street. The drivers were very respectful and the students did a great job communicating with waves.

On the way home I biked into Heather and Judy walking the Corte Madera path.

The walking continued later on the scenic Tiburon Path. Active transportation rules!

Bike Work

Rainy days are good times for bike work.

MTB to City Bike conversion kits

Before the rain we squeezed in a day of biking at Hall Middle.

Looks like the Drake High mountain bike team is off to a good start!

Accelebraking

Whilst jerking along miles of SF highway, I saw the Google Self-Driving car in action and coined "Accelebraking" while contemplating traffic (from within it).

Accelebraking: when you go right from the gas to the brake.

On the note of accessive acceleration. My new favorite part of work is telling people the "Speed Limit" is the fastest speed you can legally drive... they often don't believe me!

One of the best ways to keep speeds reasonable is a traffic calming device.

Strange looking? Safe looking.

Pleasant Valley

I had a more than pleasant time at Pleasant Valley Elementary.

I arrived a few minutes early and discovered this jewel, O'Hair Park.

On the way back south, I ran out of gas and had to stop for fuel.

My tank went from E to F.

MTB to City Bike

Mountain bikes are versatile compared to road bikes, but neither make good city bikes.

Saddened by the sight of uncomfortable bikers, I've created a MTB to City Bike conversion guide.

MTB Problems

1. forward posture and a long reach to the handlebars creates pain and hinders visibility
2. tires don't prevent flats and don't perform well on roads

No more riding with fingertips!

City Bike Solutions

1. sensible cruiser handlebars raise and sweep back for an easy, upright reach
2. city tires with flat protection and a generous width

The process is straightforward, remove the cables and handlebars. 


 Install handlebars and cables.

As if magic, riders now feel relaxed and comfortable, no wonder these bikes are so popular!

Safe Routes Friday

Today I was thankful for Friday because we rode bikes all day at Sinaloa Middle School!

We had 280 students riding our courses, they got extra credit for riding to school.

Here's a few shots from a recent elementary bike rodeo. I love my job!

Our road course featured a popular crosswalk bypass.

Tomorrow we have a weekend Riding With Youth class at Brookside Upper. Awesome!

Google Car + Dutch Design

Today three different people cut me off, then immediately pull over and stop.

Bad drivers are making Google cars seem much more reasonable.

Corte Madera Marshes

I got out to the Corte Madera Marshes in the wind today.

I've been in schools all over Marin this week and it has been awesome. I'm always impressed with the number of insightful questions from the students.
