San Domenico

Safe Routes was featured in the San Domenico newsletter!

Second and fourth grade students participated in special assemblies recently with Safe Routes to Schools. As Dr. Behrs mentioned before, the Safe Routes to Schools programs are designed to decrease traffic and pollution. They promote walking and biking to school and use education and incentives to show how much fun it can be! The program addresses parents’ safety concerns by educating children and the public, partnering with traffic law enforcement, and developing plans to create safer streets.  Marin County pioneered the national Safe Routes to Schools program that has spread across the U.S. Want to know more? Today Safe Routes was at San Domenico School  to present a short play.

In "Pedal Power" the "Traffic Monster" gets his power from the bad aspects of driving.  The "Traffic Transformer" shows up and gets people into active transportation.  Students choose to bike scoot and walk onstage, causing the Traffic Monster to loose his evil power and eventually rejoin us as part of humanity.  Don't let the monster get you!

No Traffic Monsters at San Domenico. Yes, I have a bike on my bike.

I often ride and occasionally drive Butterfield Road in San Anselmo to visit schools such as San Domenico.  Unfortunately for the hundreds of students in the numerous schools, Butterfield Road is a scary road to bike. The road is a long dead-end with heavy school traffic and hurried drivers.

Poorly constructed "bike lanes" run the whole length on both sides.  Let's take a look.

Almost every stretch of the "bike lane" is used for parking.

Unless the "bike lane" is too narrow for parking.

Even in the narrow lane, most of the space is unsafe.

Most cyclists try to use the lane, placing them mere inches from fast moving traffic.

I imagine if you never bike it would be easy to get mad at me for riding in the "car lane".  The reality is that the "bike lanes" are very dangerous.

The good news?  This is an easy fix.  No bike lanes and slow moving cars.

The wild flowers were great, lots of iris in the woods.

Tam Road Loop

It's a beautiful Friday and I got away for a 33 mile road loop around Tam.

I'm still getting used to using Endomondo, auto-pause does not auto-restart!

Novato, Endomondo

Working in Novato today meant a 30 mile round-trip bike commute.

I've signed up with Endomondo in preparation for the National Bike Challenge.

Starting in May (National Bike Month) the goal is to log 10 million miles by bike.

Get the free exercise app to track trips/workouts and share/compete with others/teams/me.

After every day on the road with crazy drivers,  I unwind with a mental vacation.

Go Dutch!  Where vehicular collateral damage is not acceptable.  Refreshingly humane.

SF Sunday Streets

Today Heather and I rode to the celebration that is San Francisco Sunday Streets!

Streets from Golden Gate Park along the Great Highway were opened to people.

On the ferry we bumped into Renee who's looking into a Fairfax Streets event...

No cars, no traffic laws, no problems.

Today the Great Highway was great for a new reason!

Quiet and calm, it almost felt like biking on the beach.

My favorite dog/bike combo of the ride, cargo dog.

This guy had his rear derailleur explode, luckily I had a 15mm wrench.

Yes there was live music, but this was the only mobile band.

Afterwards we stopped by the California Academy of Sciences.

Hundreds of people out walking, biking, skating, or just enjoying the public space.

By the end of the day we rode over 30 miles with a few climbs.

Rodeo Season + NPaRgh

The weather is getting nice and we had 3 Bike Rodeos this week!

Today Manor Elementary really got their rodeo on. It was wicked sick.

I'd like to take credit for the crowded bike racks, but this is Manor!

note electric cargo bike (front right) and background bikes

Bicycling & NPR scolded scofflaw cyclists like this electric cargo rider.

Local Spokie- "Following traffic laws as they currently stand is a good way to die."

Overwhelming the cyclists cited lack of safe infrastructure, GO DUTCH!

Way to represent bikers! You all deserve a safe place to ride, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
